In the very environments where so much food is produced, rural communities can face their challenges regarding food systems.  In this Thought Exchange, we hope to explore how rural communities are innovating to create opportunities and ensure an accessible food supply in their own communities.

Cara Shan

Cara Shan spent the first 17 and most recent 5 years of life in Ardrossan, now with her husband and two daughters. Driven to strengthen rural communities through socially embedded food economies, she serves as Secretary for the Ardrossan Recreation & Agriculture Society, while also contributing to Connect for Food’s initiatives. Currently, she is completing a capstone project in a Master of Arts at Athabasca University: a GoA-funded Town of Athabasca project focused on the local food economy and passive solar greenhouse food production. Earlier in her MA, she organized the rural Communities in Transition online event series for AU with over 1000 participants, and has a professional background in environmental science and technical communication with work experience in Asia.
